Going back to the neurowitch theme. If I was gonna do the inquisitors, at some point I needed to do the witches.
When the idea of this theme first came to me I kept bumping into miniatures and references to the game necromunda (Games Workshop) and I just loved the sound of the word. I wanted to create creatures and characters that felt like the word necromunda to me. For a while there I was labeling this project as “cyberpunk” but I'm realizing it's actually more like a grimdark meets Blade Runner meets Cameron's definition of cyberpunk lol.
My brief for the witches was to create something beautiful but creepy, a witch, but a witch that was obviously sci-fi and not fantasy.
In my first sketch attempts that kept missing the mark and eventually realized that there wasn't enough "witch" in the designs and I was focusing too much on the sci-fi aspect of them. I decided to take out the wires and cords and robotics and lean more into modern clothing and a design that implied there was a high level technology of around them even if they weren't themselves adorned in it.
As I've been doing these designs I've felt a bit of detachment from the way that I usually sketch and draw, so I decided to take some of the sketches and notes that I'd use to build up to these final images and place them in the final design like I normally do in my sketchbook. Feels a lot more like me and I like the energy it adds to the final painting. Somehow its feels more honest, like "here's all the madness that led up to this thing". Decided to go back and add this idea to the last inquisitor I painted. (below)
Here's a blown up version of the witch as well. (I'll start including these larger versions at the bottom for those that want a better look)
For this next Raid I'm headed into new terrain...literally. I almost never do environments, so it's time to try something new and take a crack at it. So stay posted you 40k Kroot fans.
